NanoAligner, the starter model for precise alignment in photonics and micro-assembly

In photonics manufacturing, precise alignment determines coupling efficiency, signal stability, and process reproducibility. The required tolerances are increasingly in the lower sub-micrometer range. However, in R&D and pilot production environments, a fully automated assembly system is usually not flexible enough.

Our NanoAligner was developed specifically to meet these requirements. The system offers a flexible and cost-effective solution for precise and rapid alignment processes in research, process and product development. This enables short development cycles, steep learning curves, and early-stage semi-automated manufacturing.

Flexible all-in-one solution with powerful process software

The system is based on a high-precision 6-axis alignment stack that enables the precise positioning of optical components. Combined with the associated control electronics and our TestMaster process software, it creates a ready-to-use, high-performance platform for demanding alignment processes.

The software includes a comprehensive library of programming modules for alignment, motion control, and image processing. This allows alignment tasks to be implemented efficiently and complex test routines to be automated with minimal effort. In addition, TestMaster features a Python interface, making the full functionality of Python available for programming the NanoAligner.

Integrated powermeter and interfaces for additional instruments

For precise signal detection, our NanoAligner features an integrated photodetector with a transimpedance amplifier that functions as a power meter with six measurement ranges. The power signal is fed directly into the motion controllers, allowing the light intensity to be processed in real time alongside the axes’ position data for highly dynamic alignment algorithms. If necessary, the NanoAligner can be expanded with additional photodetectors to perform multi-channel alignments.

NanoAligner offers additional digital and analog inputs and outputs for capturing external signals, as well as hardware and software interfaces for the integration of additional instruments and measuring devices. This flexibility is particularly valuable in research and development environments.

Versatile handling for grating coupling and edge coupling

The gripper included in the system, which features integrated force measurement, enables precise and controlled handling of sensitive components in vertical and horizontal orientation. As a result, NanoAligner can cover various alignment scenarios like grating and edge coupling with none or little mechanical modifications to the system. For more specialized component geometries, custom gripper fingers can be ordered, which can be replaced quickly and easily.

The combination of precise mechanics, intelligent signal processing, and controlled handling ensures stable and reproducible alignment results.

Scalable alignment system for future automation

A key advantage of the NanoAligner is its scalable system architecture. The system can be expanded at any time into a complete NanoGlue micro-assembly system or even into a fully automated production solution.

This provides users with a flexible platform that is suitable for both precise alignment tasks in research and for the transition to automated manufacturing processes.
